Formalwear 101: A Quick & Easy Guide from Lorenzo's Formalwear

Photography done by Weddings by Raisa

Choosing the perfect formal wear for your wedding can seem like a somewhat daunting task, especially for those who have had little experience with formal dress. However, there are some fairly simple and effective guidelines you can follow to help you in your decision making process. The first and perhaps most important decision you will have to make is to choose your formal wear provider.

While choosing, it’s important to remember that not all companies are the same, or even similar. We have several important criteria we feel a provider should be able to meet, and if they can, we're confident that you'll be satisfied with your choice, regardless of what that choice may be.

Do They Have The Fashion?

The first key point may seem obvious, but it's still important to look into. Can the store provide you with all the latest fashions and styles on both the tuxedos themselves, and the accessories? You want to be sure that your provider is both up to date, and knowledgeable, so you don't get left in the last decade.

In-stock or Outsourced?

Next, you'll want to ask if they have a large quantity, and variety of inventory in stock. This is a key concept, because while many stores may say they have everything “in stock”, their version of the phrase may mean “in a warehouse in Texas”. You'll want to be sure that your provider's inventory is actually at their store, so that they can provide any last minute changes or adjustments you may desire.

Do they offer onsite tailoring?

Last, but certainly not least, you'll want to ask if they have a professional tailor on site. This may seem a tad extreme to some, but when you come to pick up your formal wear and realize something doesn't fit quite right, an onsite tailor will seem like a lifesaver. With these main ideas in mind, your next task will be to actually make your tuxedo selections.

Choose the Right Style for You

There are a wide variety of styles you can choose from when deciding on your wedding tuxedos. If you're going for a more traditional look, a lower buttoning coat, such as a one button jacket, with a classic notch lapel, may be the way to go. If you'd prefer a more contemporary look, a stylish three or four button jacket may be more up your alley. Regardless of what you choose, just remember that it's your event, and you want to be sure you're happy with how it looks, and not just selecting it because of a brand name, or recommendation.

There are many styles to choose from and the best way to truly decide is of course to simply try different selections on. If you've chosen a provider with all their inventory right there in the store, you should be able to try on any style of tuxedo you like, on the spot. Your next decision will then be to choose the accessories to go with the tuxedo.

Choosing Vests and Ties

The most important decision here will be to select the ideal vest and tie combination. You'll notice that I didn't mention cummerbunds at all... that's because vests are becoming more and more popular with each passing season, with around 98% of wedding parties are our store choosing them over cummerbunds.

So, with that in mind, you have a few options. For the groom, the best option is to try to match the bride... if the bride wears a white dress, than a white vest and tie is a good choice. For the groomsmen, the choices are a bit more flexible. If possible, you can try to match the vests and ties of the groomsmen to the bridesmaid’s dresses. This will almost always look stunning if the match is accurate.

However, if the bridesmaids dress color is difficult to match, a sharp looking silver, black, or gray is always a safe, and elegant choice. Those are all neutral choices, and won't conflict with anything else. Most vests will have a bow tie or long tie that matches them, and either choice is appropriate for all types of weddings.
